The French Ambassador to Ireland, H.E. Madame Emanuelle d’Achon presented the awards to the 2011 winners, Donal Costello and Olivier Neu today.

Donal Costello’s research project, “Energy Saving Opportunities within the Dairy Sector”, will explore the new developments in technology which can bring about reduced energy consumption for this major manufacturing activity. Olivier Neu will focus his research on “Efficient Heating in Public Transport” and how to achieve the optimum balance of energy efficiency and consumption through heating, cooling and lighting optimisation based on worldwide best practice.

Liam Connellan, Chairman of the Veolia Environnement group in Ireland said: “This type of scholarship programme enables companies to tap into the next generation of emerging engineering talent. The proposed projects clearly demonstrate that UCD graduate engineering students are passionate about understanding the nature of future energy generation, supply and consumption. We look forward to the findings from the reports.”

Dr David Timoney, Dean of Engineering at UCD said: “This support from the Ireland Fund of France and the environmental services group Veolia is critical to the professional development of our students. It provides them with practical and applied experience as they pursue their research projects, and ultimately their professional career in engineering. We encourage all of our Masters in Energy Systems Engineering students to work with industry partners.”

The research projects will be undertaken with the support of Veolia’s transport division, Veolia Transport, operators of LUAS and Dalkia, Veolia’s energy and utilities management company.

Why choose Post-graduate study?

With postgraduate study, you’ll gain specialist knowledge, increase your employability, and in todays environment it can give the edge over competition for work positions.

Postgraduate study is a popular choice amongst graduates in Ireland.

There are over 1,000 taught programmes at postgraduate level to choose from.

WHY CHOOSE POSTGRADUATE STUDY?

Your chosen career could benefit from the specialist knowledge that a Master’s degree offers

You want to find out more about the academic subject you studied as an undergraduate

You would like a career as an academic and you need a PhD to do so

A Master’s degree gives you increased chance of employment

Your employment and earning potential will be enhanced by a further qualification

A postgraduate course provides the ideal opportunity to travel. Great Britain, Europe and the US are popular destinations for Ireland’s graduates.

WHAT’S ON OFFER

1) Taught Programmes

MSc
A Master’s degree usually involves one year full-time or two years’ part-time study.

MBA
Students will get more out of an MBA after a period in the workplace. A Master’s in Business Administration is aimed at experienced graduates who wish to progress to top management positions. Courses usually last one to two years, full-time.

Postgraduate diploma/certificate
Almost always vocational in nature, these courses last one year full-time or two years part-time.

2) Research Programmes

MPhil/PhD

Both require a programme of supervised, individual research which is then written up by the student as a thesis. Your supervisor will guide you in the right direction.

MPhil takes one to two years compared to three-plus years for a PhD.

MRes
A one-year Master’s degree provides training in research methods, with a much larger research component than a taught Master’s degree. The rest of the time is spent learning specialist skills and knowledge to support the research. It is often used as a taster course before doing a PhD.

FUNDING

Local authorities that give undergraduate study awards will usually extend them to cover one postgraduate qualification for a maximum of two years.

In addition the graduate skills conversion programme allows graduates to acquire qualifications for employment in the information and communication technology sectors.

There are many independent funding bodies that can be approached for scholarships and bursaries to cover part or even all postgraduate costs.

There are many different postgraduate options both in Ireland and overseas and study can be pursued on a full time or part time basis depending on circumstances.

Research or Taught?
Choosing between a research programme and a taught programme will usually depend on the area of study you are interested in. Research Degrees are usually used in careers such as academia or research and demand a lot of initative, as you must do most of the work yourself. Taught programmes consist of more lectures and usually a dissertation is required in the final phase.
